The Old and New Spoiled Rich Kid

Then there’s someone my age; let’s call him Old T. We graduated in the same year and retired in the same year. He’s a good guy, just a bit too fond of having fun. At work, he was unmatched at table tennis and unbeatable at Go. But he never read books, or even newspapers. He was a teacher, yet he never taught a single day or stepped into aroom.

When I turned 50, the principal, who was quite close to me, came to me one day and said, "What’s wrong with Old T? I asked him to teach, but he said he couldn't. So I assigned him to the lab. But the moment extracurricular activities started, he’d gather a few people in the lab to play Go! It’s just unacceptable! He’s a old teacher—how am I supposed to reprimand him?"

I smiled and replied, "Whether he works or not, it makes no difference. Those who actually work are treated worse than those who don't! He’s still doing something, after all. Extracurricular time is meant to be free anyway. Just let him be! At worst, he’ll just play Go for another ten years."

The principal gave me a wry smile, then turned and walked away.
